Zinnias as a group are one of the best-performing summer annuals around. And Mexican zinnias (Zinnia haagena) are tougher still.  Their smaller, narrower leaves make them more tolerant of heat, aridity, and winds.  And the 'Persian Carpet' strain of Z. haagena, shown here, is generally considered to be the most heat-proof zinnia of them all.

This dwarf (12-15 inch tall) variety produces dahlia-like flowers in a multitude of bicolors in a range that includes cream, gold, orange, chestnut, and burgundy.  Handfuls make beautiful small bouquets all by themselves.

Sow seeds directly where plants are to grow.  Space and thin per packet directions.  Renee's Garden is a good seed source.

Hi Sharon,
I'm in agreement with you regarding Zinnia's ability to stand up to extreme heat and still look beautiful. I was in Palm Desert a few years ago, melting in 115 degree weather, while the Zinnia's looked fresh as daisies! Great color for hot belts.
