I fantasize that one awful Monday morning, Bob Denman was sitting in a dentist’s chair looking at the advance of a curved, pointed steel tool designed to find cavities. Of course any instrument of torture looks larger than it really is, but instead of screaming, he thought “Eureka! This would be perfect for untangling rootbound plants!” Thus, I’m guessing, Denman’s root hook was born.
It really is a wonderful tool. For this picture, I went into a local nursery and asked one of the staff for the most potbound plant on the place. It turned out to be an old Euryops pectinatus ‘Munchkin’, which I cleaned up for planting in a couple of minutes with my root hook.
You can get a hand-made root hook from Red Pig Tools for $18. Just keep it away from your dentist.
