Something else I learned at the Sunset Celebration Garden Q&A Booth (see post above): Lint from your dryer creates a barrier snails won't cross, says Mary-Kate Mackey, a garden writer from Eugene, Oregon and frequent contributor to Sunset magazine, who helped us man our booth last weekend. Mary-Kate doesn't remember where she first read this tip, but she's been using it every year since with consistent success.
Make a rope out of the lint and tuck it under the foliage where it doesn't show, she says. It will eventually decompose, says Mackey, but it will last the season. This works best with older dryers, she says, because the newer models don't produce as much lint.
