On the early summer ANLD garden tour in Portland, I couldn't help but notice how much fun Courtney Downing (Green Artisans) had designing curves into one of her gardens. In the gravel walkway below, curves are exaggerated in a way that draw you down the garden path.

In the rear garden, Downing gives you a doubly curvaceous border of golden bamboo: the whole planting snakes along a gently curving border, while individual culms arch out over the lawn.

On the return walk down the other side of the garden, a lovely stone staircase swings you down into a lower patio. It's much more interesting that a right-angle staircase would have been.

I'm pretty sure I can identify a lot of these plants, but it would be helpful if Sunset included this information in articles like this. In the first picture, I see hosta, hakenochloa, heuchera, ophiopogon nigrescens, soleirolia - what else is there? I love the colors.

You are good with your plant ID in a photo. Also in the garden are Hydrangea aspera and Petasites japonicus varigata on the left. Towards the back are Gunnera manicata, purple Erysimum 'Bowles Mauve' and a Hosta 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd'. The Hosta closer to the front is a 'Sum and Substance'. Some of the small spots of color come from hot colored Impatiens that spice it up. Enjoy!
